What types of demo video are there?
What is a demo video?
A demo video is a compelling visual presentation that showcases the features, benefits, and functionality of a product or app. It effectively demonstrates how the offering works, making it easier for the audience to understand and appreciate its value. Through a combination of screen-recorded, animated, or live-action elements, demo videos captivate viewers and help businesses communicate complex ideas in a simple, engaging, and memorable way.
Why use a demo video?
Demo videos are a brilliant way to show off exactly how a website, mobile app or product works. They’re great tools that help build realistic expectations among your audience about what can and can’t be done. Because they show the product itself in action, they help underscore the benefits of what you’re offering in a way that’s so much more potent than text alone – after all, seeing is believing! This also makes them powerful educational tools. Why tell your audience how to do something, when you can show them?
Why does video work well as a tool to demo software or products?
Video excels when it comes to showcasing software or products. Rather than static screenshots, product images or bland text descriptions, video takes your viewers inside your app or product and lets them really get a flavour for how it works. You can use storytelling devices like cross sections, diagrams, transitions and close-ups to really show the inner workings, and give the viewer a much clearer vision of what a product or app is, and how it’s likely to benefit them.
What makes a successful demo video?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes an effective demo video that stands out from the rest, but there are a few common trends.
Firstly, production value is important: a product or app demo should look as professional and slick as your product or app, sending the right message about the quality your customers can expect.
The right length is also important – not too long that it becomes boring.
It should also focus on just the right features to get your meticulously identified target audience excited.
Above all, video is supposed to be engaging and fun – so make sure your videos are interesting, selling your product in an interesting way.

How long should a demo video be?
There are always exceptions to this rule, but we recommend demo videos should ideally run between 60 to 90 seconds to keep things snappy and engaging. It’s important to keep in mind that, for app demo videos, different app stores have different rules including length restrictions. But generally speaking, the goal is to hook users and make them excited to download and explore your app – without them losing interest because the video is too long.
How long does it take to create a demo video?
The turnaround time to make demo videos varies depending on the style of video and plenty of other factors. Creating a basic demo video using DIY video software might not take long at all – but creating more professional videos can take 4-6 weeks, as a ballpark average.
